Assignment 1: Feedback and Amendments

Feedback

My Tutor (Geoff Taylor) has sent me his feedback for the first Assignment: My 2D/3D Scans. Upon receiving it I was very happy with Geoff’s comments, I have taken note of his recommendations and will be making a few amendments.

Please click the images below to see a more detailed, close-up version of the feedback report.

Amongst the feedback Geoff asked me a number of questions, I shall answer these here and email the answers to him.

  • “What software do you actually use?” – I am currently using Photoshop CS5 as I do not have Photoshop Elements, I believe they’re very similar however the CS5 version has a lot more tools and facilities.
  • “What Format had you intended?” (In reference to the orientation of my images) - I had intended for all of the images in the assignment to be viewed in Portrait format.
  • “Are these composite images using Photoshop layers?” – Yes, I had each scanned image on its own layer and then positioned them into the different arrangements.
  • “Has your Photographic Practice course been assessed yet?” – No, I’ve only just started it and I’m completing the work along side this course. My learning log can be found at http://mikemooreoca3.blogspot.com/

Amendments

The first amendment which I shall make is to crop my background image (beach Towel scan) to remove the small blue section at the bottom.

Amended 1 – Cropped to remove small blue section at the bottombackground crop

Next, Geoff suggested that I re-arrange my final composition so that the image looks and feels more natural. As they are, the items look very precisely placed, particularly the coins. Unfortunately I am not able to move the notes. My scanner automatically detects that I am scanning money and will not scan more than approximately one quarter of a note before it gives an error message explaining counterfeit rules and regulations. I managed to overlap the three notes in a particular way and block out a lot of the detail with plain paper so that the scanner didn’t recognise the money. I can move the image of the three notes around but am unable to separate them.

Amendment 2 – Items re-arranged for the first time1st

In the first of my new arrangements I have swapped the background for the new cropped version, altered the position of all of the coins, slightly rotated the sunglasses and camera but left its strap in the same place, lowered the white boarding pass and raised the luggage tag. This already appears to be a more pleasing composition that is both natural and aesthetic.

Amendment 3 – Items re-arranged for the second time2nd

In the second of my new arrangements I rotated the camera back up slightly but left its strap in the same place, rotated the glasses down to the right slightly, swapped three of the coins with the luggage tag, altered their position slightly and placed the final coin next to the luggage tag. I feel this arrangement is an improvement from the original final image however I don’t think it’s stronger than my first amended image composition.

Amendment 4 – Items re-arranged for the third time3rd

In my third re-arrangement I simply altered the previous ever so slightly. I have moved the passport down a touch, placed the single coin behind the luggage tag stub but so most of it is still visible and finally I altered the positioning of the three coins. The one euro coin is tucked behind the jet2 boarding pass and 20 cent piece and the 50 cent coin is tucked behind the 20 cent coin and the white boarding pass. I feel that this arrangement is the most natural in appearance with everything being more randomly spread out and still very pleasing to the eye as the composition works well. I proclaim this to be my final, final image of the assignment.
